Deposit protection schemes for private tenants

Landlords and letting agents must protect the deposit a tenant pays when they have an assured shorthold tenancy (AST).

The Government introduced the schemes to protect tenancy deposits and provide a fairer system for settling disputes about the return of a deposit at the end of a tenancy.

There are three government-approved tenancy deposit protection schemes landlords and letting agents can use.

PLA Lettings use www.depositprotection.com The Deposit Protection Service (The DPS).

The DPS is open to all landlords and letting agents, and is the only scheme that is free to use.The service is funded entirely from the interest earned from deposits held. Landlords and Letting Agents will be able to register and make transactions online. Paper forms will also be available should internet access be an issue. The scheme will be supported by a dedicated call centre and an independent dispute resolution service.
